DARPA is about to launch its second flight of its air-launched Gremlins drones. The test is aimed at demonstrating in-air recovery —  the ability to reel the Gremlin back aboard its mothership. Preparations began last week at Dugway Proving Grounds in Utah.

When Sierra Nevada acquired Kutta Technologies in 2015, Kutta was a small avionics consulting company that developed controller software for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for the United States military.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is averaging more than 100 reports a month of interactions between unmanned aircraft systems and commercial or private planes. This statistic gives cause to ask: how can unmanned aircraft avoid in-air collisions? For an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) to fly in civil airspace, it must be able to see, avoid, and remain “well clear” of other aircraft. With no pilot on board to spot approaching aircraft, another sense-and-avoid (SAA) technique is required.

The U.S. Army will use a General Atomics’ MQ-1C Gray Eagle unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) this spring to flight-test a new system of multiple sensors that can be controlled by ground troops or aircraft crews. Called Triclops, the system adds a sensor under each wing to the fuselage sensor carried by UAVs.
